Whats My Bag Made From?

Your guide to the most commonly used bags leathers.

There are several types of leather that are commonly used in the production of handbags, each with its unique characteristics, appearance, and uses. Some of the most popular types of leather used for making handbags include:

  1. Full-grain leather: This is the highest quality and most durable type of leather. It is made from the top layer of the hide, which has not been sanded or buffed, leaving the natural grain intact. Full-grain leather is known for its strength, durability, and distinctive natural markings, such as scars, wrinkles, and pores. It develops a beautiful patina over time, making it highly desirable for handbags.

  2. Top-grain leather: This type of leather is similar to full-grain leather but has been sanded and buffed to remove imperfections and create a smoother surface. Top-grain leather is still of high quality, but it may not be as durable or develop the same patina as full-grain leather. However, it is often used for handbags due to its more refined appearance and softer feel.

  3. Suede leather: Suede is a type of leather that has been brushed or sanded on the underside of the hide to create a soft, fuzzy texture, see our suede Amy cross body as a typical example. It is commonly used for handbags due to its luxurious look and feel, although it may be more delicate and susceptible to stains and wear compared to other types of leather.

  4. Nubuck leather: Nubuck is similar to suede in that it is brushed or sanded to create a soft texture, but it is made from the top grain of the hide, which makes it more durable than suede. Nubuck leather is often used for handbags due to its velvety appearance and tactile feel.

  5. Patent leather: Patent leather is a glossy, shiny leather that has been coated with a plastic or lacquer finish. It is known for its high shine and vibrant colors, and it is often used for handbags that require a polished and eye-catching appearance.

  6. Exotic leathers: These are leathers made from the hides of exotic animals, such as snakes, alligators, or ostriches. Exotic leathers are known for their unique textures, patterns, and luxury appeal, and they are often used in high-end handbags for their distinctiveness and exclusivity.

  7. Vegan leather: Vegan leather, also known as synthetic or faux leather, is a man-made alternative to traditional animal-derived leather. It can be made from various materials such as polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and is popular for its cruelty-free and environmentally-friendly qualities.

These are some of the most common types of leather used in the production of handbags. Each type has its own unique characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages, and the choice of leather depends on the designer's preferences, the desired style of the handbag, and the intended use.

Here at La Bulle our bags are mostly made from full grain or top grain leather, and occasionally suede and nubuck. We never use exotic leather or plastic faux leather. Check your bag to see which leather has been used.
